At the Green Shop we encourage our customers to live lightly on the planet by providing sustainable and low impact products for their homes. We have a shop in Bisley, Gloucestershire, where local people or visitors to the area can come to browse and find out more about our wide range of products for a sustainable future. Those of you unable to visit the shop can still buy our carefully selected products online at this website or via our mail order catalogue.
Roger Budgeon, founder of the Green Shop, has been selling sustainable, eco friendly and fair-traded products for 20 years. He has always been interested in environmental issues and his philosophy is “if you want to change the world you must begin from where you are”. With that thought in mind he started to sell a few ‘environmentally’ friendly products in his garage shop, even though the two activities might have seemed inconsistent at the time. People’s reaction varied; most thought he was mad and wasting money, but as the issues starting being aired in the media and the products were in front of them, petrol station customers (not known as “alternative clientele”!) wanted to buy them.
Jonathan Porritt opened The Green Shop, in its present form, in 1997. Before that, the building was the old car workshop. Now it is a light and airy relaxed space with recycled wood fittings, floors treated with natural finishes, and a wall of windows making full use of natural sunlight. The building was designed to put as much as possible of sustainable living into practice, together with the passive solar heating. We have a wind and solar charged battery system and a grid connected photovoltaic, (PV) array. Both systems serve to reduce the power we use from the National Grid and any surplus we produce can be fed back into the grid.
Roger has also succeeded in slowly “greening” the rest of the business. Sustainability is not about cutting off from the rest of the world it’s about taking a long term view and appropriately changing the way we do things. The petrol station was the first in Gloucestershire to sell unleaded petrol and LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas), and in 2002 was the first forecourt in the UK to sell blended bio-diesel. The car workshop has a rainwater collecting system for flushing the loos and pressure washing of cars and is heated by a waste product - waste oil.
The Green Shop is a leader in many new technologies. A separate company Rainharvesting Systems Ltd was started in 2001 and is establishing itself as the market leader in this technology. This company sells the technology and the equipment for harvesting and reusing rainwater in buildings.
In 2004 another company Green Shop Solar Ltd was created out of The Green Shop. It deals with products for the construction industry relating to energy such as Solar Thermal, PV systems and insulation.
Also in 2004 we became the UK importer and distributor for Auro paints and wood treatments. We formed Auro UK to distribute these products, which are probably the most environmentally friendly paint and wood finishes available in Europe.
Our philosophy is to present and do the best we can, at the time, both ethically and environmentally, this continually changes as “green thinking” and technology more forward. We always strive to live lightly on the planet and find that our example encourages others to do the same. Not only do we sell products that will help reduce your impact on the environment, but we also demonstrate and trial systems ourselves.
We do our best to support the local economy by stocking a range of locally produced goods and wherever possible we buy products made from organic materials and ingredients.
